Climate Change in Duisburg – "Intervention for a lively urban culture on September 22, 2010"
Climate change in Duisburg: a campaign in public space is to promote a lively urban
culture with a new climate in the city centre. RUHR.2010, the State Initiative
StadtBauKultur NRW, Dortmund Technical University and the City of Duisburg have
initiated the appeal for a joint walk from 6 p.m on Wednesday, September 22.
'Temporary city at particular locations' is a tri-national university competition organized
by StadtBauKultur NRW with RUHR.2010 within the dialogue of this year’s European
capitals of culture Istanbul, Pécs and Ruhr metropolis. The project series broaches the
issue of special places with urbanistic deficits, puts them into focus by temporary
interventions in order to give impetus to long-term changes.
In Duisburg the students of the urban planning department of Dortmund TU, Anna Lerch
and Mavie Lakenbrink, won through with their idea of 'Climate change in Duisburg – a
new environment in the city centre'. With the establishment of a shared space, used
equally by pedestrians, cyclists and motorists, in the traffic area between Post-,
Schwanenstraße and Steinsche Gasse, they wanted to create a connection between
inner harbour and city centre. The implementation of this plan was scheduled for
September 23 to 26, 2010, but had to be cancelled at short notice due to concerns
regarding traffic law.
The project partners now want to evoke the 'climate change' by a campaign in the
evening of September 22, 2010. On a walk from the city centre to the inner harbour and
around the especially established 'Speaker’s Corner', the initiators want to take up
position with regard to international relations in culture and building culture under the
motto 'Out into the city! Take to the street for a lively urban culture!'. Sympathizers are
cordially invited!
