Duisburg, with its just under 500.000 inhabitants, is the third largest city of the Ruhr Area. It is also the site of the biggest European inland port. Together with other municipalities of the Western Ruhr Area the port is rich with tradition and acts as a “Port of the Capital of Culture” in 2010. Therefore, the various interactions between the harbour and the city create the backdrop for the first part of the joint projects of the three Capitals of Culture. Within the past few years the historic inner city and the adjacent inner harbour (north-west of the city centre) have become important strategic parts of the Duisburg urban development: After the inner harbour’s remodelling to an innovative city space the radiance of which reaches far beyond the city’s borders, it is the intention that the inner harbour and inner city are to grow together on the basis of a master plan by Foster & Partners. In order to reach this goal it is necessary to create new connections, new ways and intervention into the city’s public space.
