White Stools Move Through the City – 2010 Chairs in Pécs
On Sunday, October 10, 2010, the realisation of the winning urban design work "2010 Chairs" came to a successful end.
For the period of one week, small, white pieces of seating furniture had provided for a new view onto the public space of the Hungarian Capital of Culture.
In various formations – piled, lined up, in heaps and in circles –they appeared successively at several locations.
After a greater folding session at the university, the intervention started with a flash mob on October 6, 2010: pupils carried the stools to the Szécheny tér, Pécs’ main square.
Here, the formal opening ceremony of “2010 Chairs” took place together with representatives of StadtBauKultur NRW1 and the Capital of Culture organisations RUHR.2010 and Istanbul 2010.
The interactive installation then travelled to the Vasarely Place and to the 48-as Place where a creative stool playground for children was created.
At the recently opened Kaptár Library, the parking lot was turned into a futuristic landscape: It became the venue for a party with electronic sounds and people celebrated in the cold Hungarian evening air.
On the last day of the realisation, a part of the chairs was handed over to the new Zsolnay Cultural Quarter that was aim and conclusion of the journey.
