The city of Pécs – located in Southern Hungary with about 160.000 inhabitants – is one of the oldest and most popular cities of the country, in particular due to its traditional university. The historic townscape has been moulded by diverse cultural influences and eras. The programme and the projects of the City of European Culture 2010 stand in the tradition of this self-conception as a vivid and open cultural city. Alongside innummerable cultural events and the design of important public spaces (open spaces, parks and streets) there are a number of new cultural and educational institutions planned. This includes one of the most important future urban development zones that is to be established on the grounds of the Zsolnay porcelain factory, a new cultural and creative quarter with various institutions intended to be attractive to the public. The grounds are located east of the city centre, and wide parts are currently unused. It is planned to combine the historic factory buildings with a number of new buildings. The open space will also be redesigned. This new and at the same time “old” quarter is to be connected with the historic city centre in an innovative way through the use of high quality public spaces.
